Laser Hair Removal FAQ

Who is it for?

We can effectively treat all skin types for a reduction in hair growth as long as the hair colour is darker than the skin and the client is over 18 years of age.The treatment is perfect for anybody that requires hair reduction on an unwanted area.

What does it do?

The light picks up the colour (melanin) in the bulb/hair and destroys the root of the hair to reduce hair growth in unwanted areas. You can expect to receive a long term 85% reduction in the entire hair growth.

How long does it take?

We usually suggest 3 to 6 treatments for hair removal.Treatments are carried out every 4-6 weeks for the face and 6-8 weeks for the body.

What happens in between treatments?

In between each session you will have a fall out phase; this is usually 1-3 weeks after a session. The hair sheds away and you are left with a smooth finish. A couple of weeks later the hair begins to re grow, it becomes softer, finer and is reduced by around 20% of the entire growth each time.

How does the treatment feel?

The general feeling is a short, sharp heat for a split second on the skin. The sensation is quite mild, especially when compared with waxing.

Is there any after care?

We recommend that you avoid heat treatments including hot baths, saunas, and steam rooms for 24-48 hours. You MUST avoid the sun and sun beds for 30 days before and after treatments.Factor 30+ must be worn to reduce this risk. Fake tanning products can be used 2 weeks either side of a treatment but must be completely removed before the next session.

How do I start?

Firstly you must book an appointment with the clinic for a consultation; these are usually free of charge. The therapist will go through a few medical questionnaires with you to see if you are eligible for the treatment. Following this, she will explain to you in full detail what the treatment entails and answer any questions for you. A patch test on the area will then be carried out to check for any skin sensitivity to light treatments. This will also give you a chance to experience the sensation of the light on your skin so that you know what to expect when coming in for your first treatment.

Anything else?

The hair must only be shaved during the treatments. No plucking, waxing, bleaching, threading or Immac creams are allowed. We cannot treat any area which has been exposed to the sun within 30 days of the treatment and cannot treat you if you are going into the sun 30 following the treatment.SPF 30+ MUST be worn on the area before and after treatments.

Often forgotten about in the sea of face wash’s, ‘men’s’ moisturisers and the dreaded soap or shower gel option, (a big no no!). Exfoliation is a hugely useful tool to utilise when looking after you skin.

Exfoliation is recognised as one of the most effective treatments to address a variety of concerns with the skin. Not only does exfoliation give a deeper cleanse, it helps to even out the texture of the skin acting as a brightener by sloughing off dead skin cells.

Desquamation; the skin’s natural process of shedding dead skin cells is also stimulated by regular exfoliation making it a great tool for anti aging.

There are two types of exfoliation action that can be applied to the skin. Products that work in a physical way such as a scrub, or products that are chemical based and dissolve the joining structures between the dead skin cells.

The most effective is the latter as it gives an even result (affecting all surface cells) and can also gain entry into the skin’s pores cleaning them out.

Our favourite exfoliation product here at Drakes is Dermalogica’s DAILY MICROFOLIANT. Suitable for all; it is a gentle yet effective product that is loved throughout the industry and quickly becomes a must have for the bathroom cabinet.

Within the treatment room we can use professional only Dermalogica products in order to increase the level of exfoliation within your regular facial. We advise that this type of treatment is undertaken as a course of 5 with and interval of 1 week between each treatment to achieve maximum results.

Have You Had a Hard Night?

Have You Had a Hard Night?

Had a Hard Night?

Have You Had a Hard Night?

It’s that time of year again. You’re social calendar is chocker; the booze, food and fun are flowing; and just upon the horizon are a collection of bank holidays for you to look upon with childish glee.

It’s Christmas boys, and we all need a few hints and tips to get us through the party season.

Here’s Drakes Survival guide written by our own party hard team:Your skin is the first thing to show your sins. Give it an instant lift by exfoliating. It takes seconds to slough away the dehydrated skin cells that are dulling your complexion. Go the extra mile by slapping a bit of moisturiser on. It’ll work wonders.

An excellent tip from Phil; (who we all know has had many a hard night) is ‘waterless shampoo’. Yes that is right, search high and low for this wonder product and it’ll be your life saver when you’re rolling into work from the night before. Lather it up like normal shampoo ‘sans water’ and towel dry. It removes all odours, leaving your hair fresh and clean.

Boost up on vitamins. Our next door neighbours at Moosh Cafe blend up some fab detox juices and smoothies. If you can’t head down and pick one up ginger, celery, cucumber and lemon are fantastic at cleansing the system. Give it a go before you head into autopilot and pick up that coffee.

A tried and tested and personal fave of Rachel’s: Whack your specs on. It hides a multitude of sins. And if you don’t have trusty specs; eye drops!

Realistically you’re a little hung over; coordination isn’t great and your boss doesn’t want to greet you first thing the day after the night before with patches of tissue all over your face. Grow it out. Embrace the beard. Who knows, someone at the office party may have a thing for the woodsman look.

Now, you have a couple of options to battle the heavy duty dark circles ever intensifying as the season rolls on. Firstly you could invest in an eye cream. The girls have been using this trick for years and there’s no reason why you shouldn’t either. It rehydrates crepey skin, stimulates circulation and if you invest in a good one it won’t just be a quick fix you will get long lasting anti aging results. Dermalogica’s Ultracalming Eye Serum is a great product to beat all the signs of a late night.

The second option comes from our lovely Jennie who assure us this is an old age German wives tale that works! Grab a cold teaspoon, (preferably that has been sitting in the freezer) and pop it on your under eye for a few seconds. It apparently ‘brightens and tightens’ which sounds pretty good to us!

Lastly. Get a good hair cut boys! If you’re looking sharp when you go to party, it’s definitely going to increase your chances of looking half decent the next day!

So that is our guide to surviving the party season. You now have the tricks of the trade, (or tricks of the partiers) to help you glide through to New Years Day. And to help you on your way, come and grab a beer with your cut.

Merry Christmas from us!

Wedding Planning

Wedding season is upon us Gents. Whether you’re a groom, groomsman, or you just want to be the best guest at the bash; we have the tips to get you looking on top form for the big day.

Facials

  • The key to looking fresh faced is preparation. Facials are progressive, and to get the best out of them you need to start at least 12-8 weeks before the big day.
  • Dermalogica’s AGE SMART FACIAL is an intensive facial perfect for instant results, smoothing the skin and evening out skin tone.
  • If you’re looking for a quick fix and don’t have the time to give for a full hour facial the 30 minute EXPRESS FACIAL includes steam, exfoliation, blackhead removal and mask.

Things to Consider

  • We would always advise that you get your last facial at least 4 days before the big day allowing the skin to normalise.
  • Your face is not the only thing that needs to look tip top. A MANICURE for the hands is a must for those wedding ring shots.
  • And while you’re at it, consider your beach feet for your honeymoon. Get them smartened up with a PEDICURE.

Happy Wedding Day!

Shaving Pains

Shaving Pains

Unfortunately some people are more prone to suffering than others (afro Caribbean skin for example) however there are some simple steps you can take to get the closest possible shave and least irritation:

  • Shave after the shower not before – the steam helps too raise the hairs away from the face.
  • Exfoliate the face – using a scrub before shaving will help to remove excess dirt and away from the ace and leave the skin ideally prepped for the shave.
  • Use a shaving brush – again this will help to raise the hair away from the face allowing the razor to do its work better.
  • Use a shaving cream rather than a foam and this will get closer to the skin rather sit on top.
  • Shave with grain – wherever possible, however everyone’s hair grows differently so follow the hair direction with your fingers first. If you do need to shave again shave across rather against the grain but ensure you re-lather!
  • Finish the shave – apply cold water to the face to close up the pores and use a balm to protect the fresh exposed skin – do not use an aftershave which contains alcohol which is why it stings.
